Audi A2

The Audi A2 is a compact MPV-styled supermini, available as a four- and five-seat, five-door hatchback. It combines efficient engines with an aluminium construction to increase its power-to-weight ratio and reduce its fuel consumption to less than 3L/100km.

How does it drive?
The Audi A2 drives like a dream. The aluminium and aluminium-alloy construction has resulted in a car that weighs less than 1,000kg. This might leave you worrying about the handling, steering and road grip; it’s a little fidgety, but on the whole, nimble and well controlled. In fact, you’ll have fun behind the wheel of the zippy Audi A2. The small diesel and petrol engines perform wonderfully, with emissions well under the 100g/km threshold. It’s an impressive little vehicle.

Is it comfortable?
Yes! In fact, the Audi A2 is too comfortable. But there’s a reason. Audi discovered that building the A2 from aluminium made it quite a costly vehicle, meaning the only way to substantiate the costs was to put it in the luxury vehicle class. As such, the Audi A2 has leather seats, excellent trim and is dripping with style. Like the Renault Espace, it has an aluminium space frame that results in the interior being more spacious than you would ever expect. Lovely. Except this made the price quite high, sending buyers into the arms of the Mercedes A-Class. Unfortunately, despite the excellent engineering and workmanship, the low sales forced production of the Audi A2 to stop in 2005.

The verdict
A used Audi A2 is destined to be a must-buy vehicle. But before you start emptying your wallet, take a look for cosmetic damage. Being made from predominantly aluminium and alloy-based material, any bodywork repairs on a used Audi A2 will be time-consuming and expensive. You’ll want to take them into account before you place a bid on any used Audi A2 at ADESA.
