When do I need to request an EKAER number?

Back to FAQ

What is EKAER?

Hungary introduced the 'Electronic Road Transport Control System' (EKAER) in 2015. This law aims the fight against corruption and to prevent VAT fraud. The purpose of the EKAER system is to monitor all goods entering the country and to ensure that no goods are put into circulation that have not been previously reported to the Hungarian Tax Authorities.

All freight transport by road must be reported in the EKAER system of the Hungarian Tax Authorities prior to departure. The arrival of the goods must also be reported.

You only need an EKAER number in the following cases:

• If the vehicle weighs more than 2.500 kg (gross weight)
• If the value of the vehicle is more than 5 million HUF
• If more than 1 vehicle is shipped on 1 truck from one loading address to one unloading address
